Transportation planning in the United States is a recent phenomena. Prior to the 1890's Bicycle Craze there were no real roads or road maps. There were rutted horse and buggy routes which were defined in plat maps in the most primitive manner, i.e., "Ten rods past the tall oak." Since the 1900's, the era of the automobile, the bicycle has been shunted to third class status with third world accommodations. Despite nearly every American city making a gesture toward bicycle routes, the usage and effect pales next to any European city. |
